A recent trending questions asks: What are the different types of yarn?
I will start out by borrowing words from one of Perfectly Knotty’s regulars and occasional shop helper Susan, “There are so many types of yarn that I can not give a short answer answer. Yarn comes in a wide variety of materials, from plant based to animal hair to synthetic petroleum based fibers, and in a variety of weights from smaller than sewing threads to so big each strand is thicker than a typical person’s leg.”
Yarn is such a varied thing these days, and it’s pretty exciting that there are so many options these days! So many more than when I was first learning to crochet and knit!
Each fiber type has different qualities for different purposes, and in that, the each have different grades of quality that determine softness or ruggedness.
There are a lot of ways that yarns are manufactured, and spun; tight, loose, textured, and each of these elements bring a variety of effects that can be functional as well as decorative.
It’s a great opportunity to get connected with a local yarn shop, if Perfectly Knotty isn’t your local shop I’m sure there is one near that can help you explore so many different qualities and aspects to the wide selections of yarn types that are available now.
You can watch this little video for a few more thoughts on this topic of what the different types of yarn are. It’s a pretty deep subject, and I think one that I will need to keep coming back to as you ask more questions!
I hope that was at least a little helpful!
