Have you ever felt completely lost in your stitching, time slipping away as your hands effortlessly create beautiful things?
I think we all have! When we can tap into the beautiful productiveness of mindfulness and focus our attention on the present moment, we tap into a wellspring of creativity and tranquility. Some of our best and favorite finished projects are the result!
Here are some tips for setting yourself up for a mindful stitching experience:
Creating a Sacred Space:
Your stitching space is your sanctuary. Make it a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, even for just a few moments. Whether it’s a cozy corner of a busy family space or a beautifully organized tote with amazing pockets that you take with you for on the go stitching. Keep it organized, well-lit, and free from distractions. Surround yourself with things that inspire you. Stay hydrated, and keep your favorite tools close at hand so you don’t have to stop and go hunting for a missing thing!
Breathe Deep, Stitch Slow:
Incorporating deep breathing into your stitching routine can help calm your mind and reduce stress. Take a few moments to breathe deeply, inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. Feel your body relax with each breath. Don’t hold your breath! This is something that I have to pay attention to! I’m a breath holder! Are you?
Tune into the Sensations:
Pay attention to the tactile sensations of stitching: the soft yarn, the smooth glide of the hook, the rhythmic clicking of the needles. Focus on the present moment, one stitch at a time.
Embrace the Process, Not Perfection:
Let go of the need for perfection. Embrace the imperfections and enjoy the journey. Remember, every stitch, no matter how small, contributes to the beauty of your final piece.
That doesn’t mean we don’t fix errors. It means that we do not berate ourselves for errors, and we tap into our innate creativity to decide on the best way (for THIS project) to correct. Remember, there are no mistakes! There are just advanced stitches that we weren’t intending to create in that moment!
