Foundation Double Crochet – Learn How

Foundation Double Crochet is another one of the KEY Game-Changer stitches that I would encourage you to master.

This stitch makes for a beautiful stretchy edge that is perfect for garments and allows for easily building rows on either side of the stitch. FDC is actually worked in a sort of verticle fashion, rather than the horizontal right to left movement than we are generally accustomed to. It is sort of an optical illusion so, don’t over-think it, trust the instructions, and you’ll be great!

Follow these comprehensive steps, as well as working along with my low-tech and easy to follow Tutorial Video

Begin FDC with Ch3
Insert hook in 2nd Ch from hook, YO and draw up one loop.
Insert hook in 3rd Ch from hook, YO and draw up one loop. There are now 3 loops on your hook.
YO and draw through 1 loop only. This creates the chain stitch. You still have 3 loops on your hook.
YO and draw through the next 2 loops on the hook.
YO and draw through the last 2 loops on your hook to complete the first stitch.

** YO and insert your hook under BOTH LOOPS of that chain stitch you previously created. This is sort of an optical illusion, as you are working in more of a vertical manner rather than the horizontal right to left manner we are most accustomed to. (p.s., I am holding my YO out of the way so you can see where I am inserting the hook)
It will look like you have 4 loops on your hook, but those 2 closest to the hook head are 1 stitch, and you work under them as if they were 1.
YO and draw up 1 loop under the chain stitch
YO and draw up one loop through the first loop. This makes your next chain stitch.
YO and draw through 2 loops
YO and draw through the last 2 loops to complete the DC. **

Continue working ** to ** until the desired number of Foundation Double Crochet stitches have been made.
