Custom Fit Knit Socks Take Center Stage!

March 29, 2025

Today, I’m absolutely buzzing to showcase Laina’s incredible knitted Fan Dance Socks. Laina is a true crafting dynamo, and her passion for creating beautiful things shines through in every stitch. When she’s not busy knitting up a storm, she’s enjoying time with her furry feline friends, supporting her US Navy husband, and diving into the worlds of crochet, weaving, and painting. Plus, she’s a big fan of curling up with a good, meaningful book.

The Maker: A Creative Spirit

Laina isn’t just a master knitter; she’s a multi-talented artist with a heart of gold. Her love for color and texture is evident in her diverse creative pursuits. It’s clear that this creative spirit influences her knitting, bringing a unique touch to her projects.

The Project: Fan Dance Socks with a Twist

Laina tackled Sylvie Rasch’s Fan Dance Socks pattern, and the results are simply stunning! Imagine soft, cozy socks in the beautiful tones of Hikoo’s CoBaSi sock yarn, perfectly showcasing the intricate fan stitch design. Laina’s socks feature a gorgeous, lace pattern that adds a touch of elegance to a classic make. The yarn’s texture highlights the stitch definition, making these socks a true work of art.

The Inspiration: A Knit-Along Adventure

Laina shared, “I knit these socks as part of a knit-along at Perfectly Knotty(back in 2019), and it was so much fun. I look forward to doing more socks. Perfectly Knotty has so many brands and colors of sock yarns I haven’t used yet!” It’s wonderful to see how community events can spark such creativity and enthusiasm!

The Perfectly Knotty Journey: Cobasi and Community

Laina used CoBaSi, available in the yarns I offer in the online store. This wool-free yarn is a perfect blend of cotton/bamboo/silk/nylon, and known for its softness and durability, making it perfect for socks that will be cherished for years to come. The knit-along provided a supportive and fun environment, allowing Laina to connect with fellow knitters and learn new techniques.

Overcoming Challenges: Sizing Up Success

Laina faced the challenge of adjusting the pattern for a larger foot size. “I have a giant foot, so I added a repeat of the 33-row pattern for the foot, and to add more decoration before I got to the toe decreases. After the 2nd pattern repeat on the foot it was only 14 rows of stockinette before the decreases. Making it for a size US 12 women’s foot.” This clever adaptation shows her problem-solving skills and dedication to getting the perfect fit. One of the wonderful benefits of knitting your own over mass produced.

The Triumph: Perfectly Fitted Fan Dance Socks

Laina’s finished Fan Dance Socks are a testament to her skill and perseverance. The fit is impeccable, and the added length and pattern repeat make them uniquely hers. It’s always a joy to see a project come together so beautifully, especially when it’s customized to fit perfectly.

Tips and Tricks: Customizing for Comfort

Laina’s tip for adjusting the pattern for larger sizes is invaluable! “If you need to adjust the length of the foot, adding a pattern repeat and then some stockinette before the toe decreases is a great way to go.” This allows for both a perfect fit and added design interest.

I didn’t always feel welcome in yarns shops

When I was a kid, learning to crochet, then knit, I used to save up my chore money to buy my Red Heart Acrylic Worsted (commonly known now as Red Heart Super Saver, or RHSS) at our local Safeway grocery store! I remember later buying it at Fred Meyer, and JCPenny too! When box craft […]
